Let’s think about Banksy’s NYC “residency”. Today there are the “authorized” makers of culture, and those on the outside… and authorized makers who perform gestures of rebellion, the better to seem part of the outsider group. First sign of membership in that group? Removal of clothing. I will not supply the usual imagery of the performer we all know we’re talking about.
But which is Banksy? He has an agent, his work is collectible and commands a price. He sold a handful of canvases from a kiosk in Central Park for $60 each, a fraction of what they’ll be worth on the secondary market.
Yet to work in his medium on the street, he has to run from the police like an ordinary tagger. And does it matter, if the work “speaks to you”?
